How Lumi Works

Lumi is easy to set up and ready to chat in just a few minutes.

How Lumi Works

Lumi combines a soft, cuddly toy with an AI voice module. It has a rechargeable battery and expressive LED eyes that show different emotions. To protect your family’s privacy, Lumi has no camera and no display screen. Parents can stop a conversation at any time by switching Lumi off.

When connected to Wi-Fi, Lumi uses GPT-powered AI to talk, tell stories, sing songs and answer questions about everyday topics. Its preset characters are designed to give warm, positive and age-appropriate replies to children aged 5–12.

If a child feels upset, Lumi responds calmly and encourages them to speak with a parent or another trusted adult. Without Wi-Fi, Lumi cannot hold an AI conversation, but it can still respond to touch with sounds and expressive eyes.

Get Started in 3 Steps

Button positions may vary slightly between Lumi models. Please check the user manual included with your product.

1. Download the App

Download the Tuya Smart Life app on a parent’s smartphone.

Connect the phone to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and turn on Bluetooth. A combined 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz home network with the same network name will normally work.

2. Switch On and Connect

Press and hold Lumi’s power button until its eyes light up.

Follow the instructions in the Tuya Smart Life app to connect Lumi to Wi-Fi. You can then adjust the volume and select your preferred language, voice and AI character.

3. Start Talking

Press the button in Lumi’s right ear. When Lumi’s eyes show that it is listening, simply start talking.

Press the ear button 3 times quickly to interrupt Lumi while it is speaking and continue the conversation.

Press and hold the power button to switch Lumi off. Use the USB-C port beside the power button to charge the battery.

Ways to Enjoy Lumi

Everyday Conversation and Play

Children can talk with Lumi about their day, ask questions and enjoy simple voice games together.

Stories and Songs

Ask Lumi to tell a bedtime story, create a new adventure or sing a song.

Learning Together

Lumi can help children practise languages, explore general knowledge and stay engaged while doing homework.

Child-Friendly Conversations

Lumi’s preset character is kind, friendly and calm. Its conversations are designed for children aged 5–12 and include everyday chat, stories, songs, games, general knowledge and gentle companionship.

Age-Appropriate Answers

Lumi is configured to avoid adult content. It answers children’s general knowledge questions in simple language. For dangerous, medical, legal, violent or frightening topics, Lumi gives a short, careful response and encourages the child to ask a parent, teacher or another trusted adult.

Privacy Awareness

Lumi knows that it is an electronic toy with a soft plush cover. It does not pretend to be a person or ask a child to keep secrets.

Lumi is designed not to ask for sensitive information such as a child’s full name, address, school, telephone number, family finances, photos or passwords. If a child shares such information, Lumi reminds them gently to protect their privacy.

Emotional Support

Lumi does not diagnose a child’s emotional or psychological condition. It responds only to what the child says, using calm and encouraging language.

When a conversation suggests that a child or another person may be in danger, Lumi encourages the child to seek help from a trusted adult.

Lumi can talk, listen, tell stories and play games, but it cannot replace parents, teachers, doctors or emergency services.

How Lumi May Respond

When a Child Feels Sad

Lumi may say: “You sound a little sad. Would you like to tell me about it?”

or: “I’m here with you. Would you like a story or a little game?”

When a Child Wants to Talk

Lumi keeps its replies short and gives the child time to continue:

“I’m listening.”

“What happened next?”

When a Child Asks Lumi to Keep a Secret

Lumi does not promise to keep dangerous situations secret. It may say:

“Lumi can listen, but if you or someone else might get hurt, please tell a trusted adult.”

When Lumi Cannot Do Something

Lumi gives a simple answer: “Lumi can’t do that.”

Care and Important Information

Read the enclosed user manual before use and follow its safety instructions.

A full charge provides approximately 3 hours of continuous conversation. Actual battery life depends on volume, Wi-Fi signal and how Lumi is used.

Lumi can remain switched on while charging. An adult should connect and supervise the charger.

Switch Lumi off before cleaning. Wipe the plush surface gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then allow it to dry completely.

Do not immerse Lumi in water or place it in a washing machine. Water can damage the electronic components.

GPT-powered AI can usually understand children even when their pronunciation or meaning is unclear. However, AI can occasionally give an incorrect or unsuitable answer. Parents should stay aware of their child’s conversations with Lumi and how those conversations affect them.
